Jazz Studies at Merit
 
Program Level: High intermediate to advanced
Ages: 9 - 18 years
Open to students enrolled in the Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuiton-free Conservatory.

The jazz program at Merit School of Music is one of the country’s finest jazz programs for intermediate and advanced young musicians. Students have participated in the Chicago Jazz Festival, Taste of Chicago, Savannah Jazz Festival, New Trier Jazz Festival, and most recently, toured New York City in the spring of 2008. Merit’s jazz program has also received numerous honors including the Best Jazz Group in the Performing Arts High School category of the Annual Downbeat Student Music Awards.

In addition to their core studies, jazz studies students participate in a combination of the following classes and ensembles:

  • Concert Jazz Band
  • Latin Jazz Band
  • Honors Jazz Ensemble
  • Jazz Combos
  • Jazz theory/improvisation
  • Jazz composition and arranging
