Music Theory

All Conservatory students take a music theory class as part of the core curriculum. The theory classes are designed for students of all levels, from beginner theory to Advanced Placement (AP) theory. More details are below:

  • Students participate in 45 minute theory classes from levels 1-6
  • Students study music theory and composition on computers and MIDI keyboards in Merit’s Computer Lab.
  • Students complete mandatory Aural Skills and Keyboard Skills courses with the use of Merit’s state-of-the-art Yamaha Clavinova keyboard lab.
  • Students who pass theory level 5 take an elective theory course. Current and past electives include (among others):
    • Musical Analysis
    • World Music
    • Introduction to Western Art Music
    • Orchestration
    • Piano Literature
    • AP Theory (for qualified students only)
  • Jazz Improvisation courses are offered to Jazz Studies students
