Early Childhood Classes

Our Early Childhood programs support a child's first steps in a lifetime journey of musical appreciation. Our learning environment is playful, developmentally appropriate and musically rich. We incorporate song, chant, movement exercises and instrument play to develop a child's imagination, musical awareness and expressiveness that inspires them to participate in our Instrumental Music program and eventually the Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory. For most Early Childhood classes, parent/caregiver participation is required. Limited financial aid is available.

Early Childhood classes at Merit are grouped by age:

Music Explorers

Shake, Rattle & Roll (newborn to 18 months)
Movers and Shakers (18 months-3 years)
Music Masters I (ages 3-5)
Music Masters Camp (ages 5-7)

Music Explorers Program

Shake, Rattle & Roll: Ages newborn - 18 months

Explore music with your child for the first time in this introductory music and movement class. We encourage children to dance, coo on pitch and play rhythm instruments, such as shakers. Join other parents and caregivers in a fun, developmental class that practices gross motor skills and stimulates babies' imaginations with music. Parent/caregiver attendance required.

Movers and Shakers: Ages 18 months - 3 years

Encourage socialization and a love of music by combining play and music for your growing toddler. The under-3 set will interact with others their age as they sing songs and play percussion instruments together in a group music and movement environment.

Music Masters 1: Ages 3 - 5 years

Give your child the basic skills necessary to play a musical instrument. Music Masters I is an imaginative class that introduces children to basic music theory, singing, dancing and a broad range of percussion instruments. Students develop by matching their teacher's pitch while singing, playing rhythm sticks, practicing music terminology and interacting with other children. Parents and caregivers are also actively involved in class.

Music Masters Camp Ages 5 - 7 years

Music Masters Camp builds upon favorite story books by combining literacy, performing arts, visual arts and of course, music. Whether flying kites, playing xylophones or illustrating their own musical story books, campers discover the excitement of learning. Armed with various percussion instruments, students engage in singing games and dances from around the world. Parents enjoy an informal presentation on the last day of class. Some parent/caregiver attendance required.

Music Together^® is an internationally recognized program for young learners and their caregivers. This research-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum fosters natural, family-style learning. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, chanting, listening, watching and exploring musical instruments. Classroom activities are supplemented by materials for use at home. One signature aspect of Music Together^® is its multi-age format, perfect for parents of multiple young children.
