Program Level: High intermediate to Advanced student musicians from the greater Chicago area by audition
The Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory represents the best of Merit's talented student musicians. Committed, passionate and disciplined, students in the Conservatory are showcased in winter and spring concerts and the Conservatory's annual Performathon, which features every performance class in the Conservatory for a total of 12 hours' worth of music.
For 26 Saturdays during the academic school year, Conservatory students receive instruction from Chicago's finest music instructors, in large ensembles, instrumental technique classes, music theory classes and a variety of elective classes, including chamber music, composition and piano for future college music majors—all tuition free. At noon each week, the entire student body comes together for Live from Gottlieb, which features performances by world-class professional artists as well as Merit's renowned faculty.
All new students interested in the Conservatory must pass an entry audition in order to enroll. After gaining entry to the Conservatory, students participate in annual placement auditions into the Junior or Senior Division, chamber ensembles and chair placement in large ensembles.
