Dear Friends, Thank you for visiting our web site. Merit School of Music is an organization dedicated to raising children through music, and helping students use their musical training to open the doors to college and college scholarships. Founded in 1979, over the past 28 years Merit has grown to become one of the largest community music schools in the country. We are known for our comprehensive, sequential curriculum and the substantial level of financial support we provide for our students – nearly $2 million every year. The Merit experience gives thousands of motivated students the opportunity to grow both as musicians and as people. In June of 2005, we took a giant step in our organizational life by purchasing and moving into a permanent home at 38 South Peoria Street in Chicago’s West Loop. We began the search for a larger space in 2001 when we realized that we had seriously outgrown our rented space in the basement of the Dearborn Station. We now have a 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility where students can perform and enjoy concerts in our 372-seat concert venue, Anne and Howard Gottlieb Hall, take lessons and classes in our 52 classrooms and practice rooms, or make high-quality audition tapes in our recording studio. For the first time, Merit has its own music library where students can listen to recordings of pieces they are working on, access our large collection of sheet music and reference materials, or simply find a quiet place to do homework. Our piano lab – stocked with Yamaha Clavinovas –provides unprecedented opportunities to gain keyboard skills and learn new repertoire, while our colorful Music Explorers classroom provides the perfect setting for our classes for young children.
