Summer Programs
Explore the many Summer Programs at Merit!
July 7 – August 1, Final concerts on Sat, August 2 The Merit Summer Music Festival provides a fun, unique and musically intense environment where students have the opportunity to drastically increase their skills in just four weeks! Students will participate in three classes each day, including a large ensemble, instrumental or vocal technique class and an exciting, age-appropriate elective class.
Special opportunity for Brass, Woodwind and Percussion students! Auditions are required for all students who are not currently enrolled in Merit’s Preparatory Program or Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory. To schedule an audition, please call the Student Services Department at 312.676.3687. Current Tuition-free Conservatory and Preparatory Program students do not need to audition, but must submit a completed application to participate.
July 7 – August 1 Summer Alegre Strings classes are available for current Alegre students. Students will meet twice per week for 45 minutes to review their performance material and prepare music for their year-round performances. Classes for new students and auditions for students with prior Suzuki® training will be available in Fall 2008.
July 7 – July 23 (8 sessions) Choosing the right instrument is an exciting experience for both child and parent. Introduction to Instruments presents each instrument by family and provides aspiring young musicians with the necessary knowledge to choose his or her instrument of study. Instrument families include:
At the conclusion of the program, children will be matched with an instrument to begin their studies in our entry-level instrumental program, Dynamic Starts.
July 7 – July 30 (6 sessions) Students who have completed their first year of study on violin or piano will enrich their skills in preparation for fall auditions into Merit’s Preparatory Program. Meeting twice each week for four weeks, this group class provides an environment where students are inspired and motivated by their peers.
June 23 – June 27 Are you preparing for college auditions or just looking to get in shape for the school year? Grab your trombone or tuba and get down to low brass camp. With an amazing faculty, led by renowned trombonist and teacher, Timothy Riordan, the Merit Low Brass Festival, a one-week intensive brass camp is both challenging and fun. Students will receive daily instruction in:
June 23 – June 27 Following an electrifying 1st annual Merit Saxophone Festival, Merit is proud to present the Merit Saxophone Festival once again! Whether you are a high school senior getting ready for college auditions, or a middle school student looking to get in shape for the school year, you will be challenged by fellow musicians and a dedicated faculty. Merit's Early Childhood classes are specially designed for young children ages newborn through seven years. Research proves that early integration of music into your child's daily routine means improving his or her ability to think, reason, create, and express. These first steps give children a fulfilling experience that will begin a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Each class meets once per week for 6 weeks. All summer classes run from the week of Saturday, June 23 to the week of Saturday, July 28. For schedule information, please request an application.
Music Together® Designed for children of mixed ages with their parents or caregivers, this class fosters natural, family-style learning. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, chanting, listening, watching and exploring musical instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and offer new ways to play musically at home. SING! DANCE! ACT! All levels, ages 5 and up
This program offers individualized instruction from experienced professional musicians on all
orchestral and band instruments, piano, classical guitar and voice. Private lessons are an
essential component for students who are serious about advancing on their instruments and provide
the skills for entry and advancement into either the Preparatory Program or the Alice S. Pfaelzer
Tuition-free Conservatory. Through private lessons, students study technique and repertoire
designed to meet their individual needs. Significant financial aid is available to students
who participate in our group class programs. Limited financial aid is available for non-program participants.
