Merit Summer Music Festival

July 7 – August 1, Final concerts on Sat, August 2
Intermediate and advanced students, ages 6–18

The Merit Summer Music Festival provides a fun, unique and musically intense environment where students have the opportunity to drastically increase their skills in just four weeks! Students will participate in three classes each day, including a large ensemble, instrumental or vocal technique class and an exciting, age-appropriate elective class.

Special opportunity for Brass, Woodwind and Percussion students!
Audition for the coveted brass, woodwind and percussion chairs in the Festival Symphony Orchestra!

Auditions are required for all students who are not currently enrolled in Merit’s Preparatory Program or Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory. To schedule an audition, please call the Student Services Department at 312.676.3687.

Current Tuition-free Conservatory and Preparatory Program students do not need to audition, but must submit a completed application to participate.

Alegre Strings

July 7 – August 1
Current Alegre students, ages 5–18, who have completed one year of study or more

Summer Alegre Strings classes are available for current Alegre students. Students will meet twice per week for 45 minutes to review their performance material and prepare music for their year-round performances.

Classes for new students and auditions for students with prior Suzuki® training will be available in Fall 2008.

Introduction to Instruments

July 7 – July 23 (8 sessions)
Beginning students, ages 6–12

Choosing the right instrument is an exciting experience for both child and parent. Introduction to Instruments presents each instrument by family and provides aspiring young musicians with the necessary knowledge to choose his or her instrument of study.

Instrument families include:

  • Strings
  • Piano
  • Brass
  • Woodwind
  • Percussion
  • Voice

At the conclusion of the program, children will be matched with an instrument to begin their studies in our entry-level instrumental program, Dynamic Starts.

Dynamic Starts Enriched

July 7 – July 30 (6 sessions)
Open to violin and piano students with one year of experience, ages 6–12

Students who have completed their first year of study on violin or piano will enrich their skills in preparation for fall auditions into Merit’s Preparatory Program. Meeting twice each week for four weeks, this group class provides an environment where students are inspired and motivated by their peers.

Merit Low Brass Festival

June 23 – June 27
Intermediate and advanced low brass students, ages 12–18

Are you preparing for college auditions or just looking to get in shape for the school year? Grab your trombone or tuba and get down to low brass camp. With an amazing faculty, led by renowned trombonist and teacher, Timothy Riordan, the Merit Low Brass Festival, a one-week intensive brass camp is both challenging and fun.

Students will receive daily instruction in:

  • Small ensemble playing
  • Orchestral section playing
  • Technique and repertoire
  • Low Brass Choir
  • Master classes with leading artists in the low brass world

Merit Saxophone Festival

June 23 – June 27
Intermediate and advanced saxophone students, ages 12–18

Following an electrifying 1st annual Merit Saxophone Festival, Merit is proud to present the Merit Saxophone Festival once again! Whether you are a high school senior getting ready for college auditions, or a middle school student looking to get in shape for the school year, you will be challenged by fellow musicians and a dedicated faculty.

Music Explorers

Merit's Early Childhood classes are specially designed for young children ages newborn through seven years. Research proves that early integration of music into your child's daily routine means improving his or her ability to think, reason, create, and express. These first steps give children a fulfilling experience that will begin a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Each class meets once per week for 6 weeks.

All summer classes run from the week of Saturday, June 23 to the week of Saturday, July 28. For schedule information, please request an application.

Music Together®
Ages newborn–3 ½ years

Designed for children of mixed ages with their parents or caregivers, this class fosters natural, family-style learning. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, chanting, listening, watching and exploring musical instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and offer new ways to play musically at home. Adult caregivers are encouraged to join their children for this essential family musical experience. www.musictogether.com

Feel the Beat Series

Baby Beats
Ages newborn–18 months

Join with other Merit families as you and your baby or toddler experience the joys of music and movement for the first time. Families are introduced to rhythm instruments, vocal play, and movement activities in a fun and nurturing environment.

Toddler Beats I
Ages 18 months–2 ½ years

Your child will make music while developing sensory awareness and gross motor skills. Activities include singing, playing rhythm instruments and the dramatization of songs through whole body movements.

Toddler Beats II
Ages 2 ½–3 ½ years

Children and parents explore a wide variety of experiences in music and movement while strengthening previously learned skills. New musical concepts and techniques are also introduced, including increased use of percussion instruments.

Kid Beats I
Ages 3 ½–5 years

Children will learn basic musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, loud/soft and high/low through singing, playing instruments, and movement in a fun filled and nurturing environment. Activities include improvisation on instruments, structured musical activities, and exploration of tonal instruments. A parent or caregiver is required to attend all classes.

Kid Beats II
Ages 5–7 years

This class encourages students to participate more independently as their parents transition to a mentoring role in class. Children will continue to build basic musical concepts through singing, playing instruments, and movement activities in this fun filled class. Students sing, use body percussion, and play rhythm instruments and xylophones. This class also promotes creativity through improvisation and composition.

Musical Theatre

July 7 – August 1. Final concert on August 2
Open to all students, ages 12–18

SING! DANCE! ACT!
Do you love to sing? Do you love to dance? Are you an aspiring actor or an actress?
 
Come join Merit’s Musical Theatre this summer! Led by Merit’s talented faculty, with additional instruction from acting, dance and choreography coaches, Musical Theatre promises to not only expand your child’s artistic knowledge, but also provide a musical experience that will enhance their personal growth!
During this intensive four-week program, students will study:

  • Broadway singing
  • Dance combinations
  • Staging / acting
  • Vocal technique

Private Lesson Program

All levels, ages 5 and up

This program offers individualized instruction from experienced professional musicians on all orchestral and band instruments, piano, classical guitar and voice. Private lessons are an essential component for students who are serious about advancing on their instruments and provide the skills for entry and advancement into either the Preparatory Program or the Alice S. Pfaelzer Tuition-free Conservatory. Through private lessons, students study technique and repertoire designed to meet their individual needs. Significant financial aid is available to students who participate in our group class programs. Limited financial aid is available for non-program participants.
 
Lessons for Adults
Merit's Private Lesson Program is an excellent option for adult music students. Merit is conveniently located in the West Loop and offers classes on weekends and during after-work hours. Our private lesson faculty enjoys working with adult students at all ability levels.
 
The Private Lesson Faculty
Merit's Private Lesson faculty includes more than 100 of Chicago's finest music teachers and performers. Many teach at local colleges and universities and perform in a host of professional ensembles. Merit carefully selects its faculty based upon an individual's training, performance experience, passion for teaching, and commitment to developing each student's full potential as a musician and as a person.
