Volunteer: Teaching Assistants / Practicing Buddies

Looking for a unique musical volunteer opportunity?

Share your musical talents and instrument specific knowledge by supporting Merit’s faculty as a Teaching Assistant. Volunteer Teaching Assistants support our faculty in many ways, including:

Helping individual students or ensemble sections (tuning, note reading, rhythm, etc.)
Performing with your section (if volunteering with an ensemble)
Assisting with room set-up
Giving students individual attention during class time
Being a general support to the classroom instructor

Group Piano Teaching Assistants
Work with beginner students to help them learn piano basics.

Average class size: 4-8 students
Level: beginner, advanced beginner
Requirements: background in piano, interest in working with students and patience

Band/Orchestra/Chorus Teaching Assistants
Work with a specific section or spend one-on-one time with a student that is performing above or below the rest of his or her section. Assist the teacher by tuning instruments and passing out materials.

Average class size: 50-70 students
Level: advanced beginner, intermediate, advanced intermediate
Requirements: proficient on instrument and basic theory knowledge

Placement of Teaching Assistants varies depending on the needs of the instructor/class /instrument(s).
